Since the rise of the industrial age, the paradigm most prevalent in companies and business management has been that of "corporation as machine". In this worldview, employees are often viewed as cogs in the machine, and the purpose of their efforts and of the machine itself is to generate profit for the owners of the machine. This worldview is extremely limiting and often unfulfilling for those involved. It creates environments where people come together only out of convenience and necessity, to get a paycheck in exchange for pursuing someone else's visions and desires. At best, this creates a relationship of "an honest day's work for an honest day's pay"; at worst, it becomes adversarial and dehumanizing, as each party uses the other as a replaceable part and partnership is lost.

“Hire and promote first on the basis of integrity;
second, motivation;
third, capacity;
fourth, understanding;
fifth, knowledge;
and last and least, experience.
Without integrity, motivation is dangerous;
without motivation, capacity is impotent;
without capacity, understanding is limited;
without understanding, knowledge is meaningless;
without knowledge, experience is blind.
Experience is easy to provide and quickly put to good use by people with all the other qualities.”
